There's a new dohc v6 that's smooth and powerful, making 290 horsepower and getting 16-23 mpg. There's a new super-stiff chassis with well-tuned independent front and rear suspensions that provide a comfortable ride on any surface, with solid and secure cornering. It's 3 inches wider for better handling and more hip room, with a wheelbase that's increased by 5 inches while overall length is only increased 1. 8 inches, thanks to a reduced front overhang. the interior is stylish and made with high quality materials, especially the leather seats in the laredo models. Nothing is missed in the standard safety equipment. the standard engine is a sweet new 3. 6-liter v6 with double overhead-cams making 290 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The big 5. 7-liter v8 hemi is still an option for all models. The 4x4 v6 uses a single-speed transfer case, while the 4x4 v8 uses a two-speed transfer case with selec-terrain and hill descent control. There are three levels of 4wd capability. Quadra-trac i is a full-time system with a single-speed transfer case and 48-52 front-rear transfer. Aerodynamic bellypans run the full length of the chassis, chasing fuel mileage. the sides have big rectangular concave sculpting, as if it's a place where jeep meets bmw, and slightly trapezoidal wheel arches, a distinctive if still subtle touch. The side glass is straight and unaffected, with black b pillars, darkly tinted glass and stainless steel trim. Cool. jeep says the rear styling gives a nod to the 1963 wagoneer that started it all, and it's true (although we wonder how many besides us will remember mom's '63 wagoneer in high school that we snuck to the drag strip in the next state, one sunday afternoon, and ripped off crowd-pleasing 4-wheel-drive holeshots). the backlight balances the slope of the windshield, although, retro touch notwithstanding, the entire rear view looks like that of a thousand other full-size suvs. That's because function rules, as it should; when suv rear-end styling gets fancy, visibility is often lost. We also like the flipper glass window in the liftgate, which has a convenient opening handle. The vehicle locks with the press of a button on the door handle, like at the tailgate. This is nice. the body-colored parts in the laredo (mirrors, door handles, ding strip) look better than the chrome trim on the upscale overland, whose 20-inch wheels with five thick spokes just look big and bright and unimaginative. Far more jeeps will be laredo models (65 percent, expects jeep) with 17- or 18-inch wheels, which look better. there are some new colors, including a dark green that's non-metallic, bringing a welcome and rugged touch, like a nod to the wrangler. interiorno jeep has ever felt this high-quality inside (especially when it gets rolling). A fold-flat front seat is standard, adding to the 68. 7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats flat. The rear seats recline 18 degrees, and with the added legroom, life is easy back there. The grand cherokee would make a great family vacation vehicle. There's also an abundance of storage pockets and bins, including two bins under the cargo floor. A new rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle under the cargo floor, as opposed to underneath it. the front door openings are 2 inches wider and 2 inches higher, and the rear doors open 78 degrees compared to 67 degrees on the previous model. That increased convenience is just one of the many details that make the 2011 grand cherokee such an improvement. jeep engineers also spent a lot of time on nvh, and their work is reflected in the very quiet cabin, even with the throttle floored, even over rough pavement. We haven't seen a model with cloth seats, but jeep has always done good rugged cloth. The stitching on the overland's leather dashboard looks classy. the instrument panel is redesigned, nicely, with clean white numbers and needles and nice backlight. The tachometer adds a blue area, from 800 to 2500 rpm, a reminder of the best fuel-mileage range. the three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and includes cruise control with audio buttons at the back of the spokes. The overland steering wheel is wood from about 10 to 2, and it makes the steering wheel too thick, because of the heating ele. Yet it is instantly recognizable as a jeep. inside, the atmosphere is light, comfortable, and enveloping, with lots of seat adjustments, and excellent outward vision around relatively slim windshield posts. Switches and controls are clearly labeled and easy to find and use. In back is nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space. a wide range of engines is available. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The high-performance srt8 model has a 420-horsepower 6. 1-liter hemi v8 and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. The smaller, 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 gets 70 more horsepower for 2008 for a total of 305 hp; we found this engine works quite well. The 4. 7-liter engine is offered in most states with e85 flex-fuel capability, meaning it can run on gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol. The new entertainment options consist of sirius backseat tv with three child-oriented channels and jeep's mygig, a 20-gigabyte hard drive that holds songs, pictures, and navigation system map information. grand cherokee was last redesigned for the 2005 model year. It rides better on all surfaces and its turning radius is tighter. hill-start assist holds the brakes on a hill to allow smooth launches. Hill-descent control uses the abs to control the rate of speed when driving down steep hills. Air conditioning is standard, along with cloth upholstery, power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, eight-way power driver's seat, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, am/fm/cd audio with auxiliary input jack, driver information center, 60/40 split folding rear seat, an engine immobilizer, water-resistant storage compartment and 17-inch wheels. Distinctive bumper fascias and 20-inch wheels make srt8 instantly identifiable. Inside are sport seats, special trim, and a level of standard features roughly analogous to those of the limited model. Options can bring an srt8 nearly up to the overland level of comfort and convenience. options include a rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1,200); a sunroof package 800); various trailer towing packages; uconnect hands-free cell phone link 275); rear obstacle detection 255); rear backup camera. A skid plate group 295) is available, along with an engine block heater 40). safety. walkaroundin appearance, the grand cherokee is modern and square-edged, with a fashionably high waistline and small side windows. The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris. for 2008, the grille has been lengthened, the headlamps made more circular, and the front fascia has been redesigned as a two-piece unit with a lower section that can be removed to allow more clearance over rugged terrain. while conventional suvs, such as the dodge durango, are built on a separate frame like a truck, the grand cherokee uses an unusual construction scheme jeep calls uniframe, a close marriage of a welded steel unit-body and underlying front and rear modules. This is an extremely sturdy and rigid concept developed back in jeep's days with unit-body pioneer american motors. The grand cherokee has earned a five-star safety rating in both front and side impact tests from the federal government. limited models present a flashier appearance than laredo models, with a chromed grille, bright inserts in the bumpers, and accent-color bodyside molding. the overland is distinguished by mesh-texture grille inserts between its traditional vertical grille bars, which are platinum in finish; platinum accents also appear on the bumpers, side molding, roof-rack side rails, liftgate light bar, and mirrors. Wheels are chromed, and the front sill guards are brushed stainless. jeep reached deep into its heritage for the overland name. First built in 1903, the overland automobile was the earliest ancestor of the willys. Willys played an instrumental role in the development and production of the world war ii-era jeep, but was also the first automaker to seriously envision a civilian market for a military-style utility vehicle. The willys jeep debuted in 1946 and had its name shortened to just-plain jeep in the early 1960s. Although the jeep brand has passed through several owners since then, its lineage remains unbroken. the srt8 has a monochrome look all its own, relieved by bright trim at the belt level and bodyside and accented by enormous five-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Functional air ducts in its more buff front bumper fascia improve brake cooling. Srt8 is available only in bright silver, brilliant black or inferno red. interiorfor 2008, jeep grand cherokee gets an upgraded interior with a soft-touch instrument hood, a new steering wheel with controls for the electronic vehicle information center, a revised instrument cluster with brighter led illumination, a leather-wrapped and chromed parking brake handle, and new armrests with improved ergonomics. the seats are large and cushy in all trim levels except srt8, the better to enjoy the generous interior space. On laredo they are upholstered in cloth with leather as a package option, while limited seats are two-tone leather with perforated inserts. In overland, the seats are upholstered in saddle-perforated high-contrast two-tone ultrasuede, featuring accent piping and embroidered overland logos. Overland also features real wood trim on the steering wheel, instrument panel, door panels, and gear selector. The center armrest is leather-upholstered, and unique colors are employed.
